The inline tag for font sizing
Posted: Posted January 25th
Edited January 25th by Xhin
Edit Report Thread Views

Size here indicates a value between 0.5 and 1.5 and the font size will scale that much relative to whatever size it is currently.

Syntax

Smallest
Smaller
Normal
Bigger
Biggest

While you can't embed these recursively, you can get a bit more extra size out of them by embedding them inside !! and !!! tags:

!! Bigger-er
Bigger-er

!!! Bigger-est
Bigger-est

This is the last parser change we need for the merge.

This is good work!

Also note that it doesn't have to be the four sizes used above, you can do things like or w/e

...I'd safely assume you still have to be within the range of 0.5-1.5, or is the range larger than that?

@Xhin;
It looks like the size thing for fractional sizes greater than 1 but less than 1.5,
doesn’t work.

Note how they all look smaller than Size 1.

No, it seems to be an intermittent bug. Or something.

Do you have a good, or GTX0-specific, reason, not to allow sizes <0.5 but >=0.25 ?
And/or, not to allow sizes >1.5 but <=2? Or even >2 but <=4 ?

I’d like to do a geometric series from size 2^-2 to 2^2 with a common ratio of 2^(1/4).
That would be 17 values.

Would sizes <1/2 blow some people’s software or hardware or something?
Maybe sizes >2 would be unsafe for some users; but I’m pretty sure everyone could handle sizes like 2, and like 1.68179283050743 (2^(1.75)).

How much is the size rounded off? Two decimal places, or more?

I’ve never seen a bboard that’ll handle/allow sizes <1/4 or >4, but modern phpBB will handle any percentage between 25%% and 400%%, IIANM.

Because the !!!= tag in combination is about as big as I want gtx0 text to be:

SIZE DOES MATTER

Sky's the limit

On the various phpBBoards I am (or recently was) on, I got used to using sizes:
0.84 (about 0.5^0.25)
0.71 (about 0.5^0.5)
0.59 (about 0.5^0.75)
and 0.5
for my small sizes;

And using
1.19 (about 2^0.25),
1.41 (about 2^0.5)
1.68 (about 2^0.75)
and 2
for my big sizes.

So I don’t really miss those sizes <0.5 I’ve been trying to get here (in spite of having been told the inline size tag isn’t supposed to provide them!) Same for sizes >2.
But I might kinda miss sizes 1.68 and 2.
Sometimes I have two (or even three?) different levels of emphasis.
Sometimes, especially in long or comprehensive or original posts, I’ll have two (or even three) levels of topicalisation.

At size 0.71, each character takes half the area it would take at size 1.
At size 1.41, each character takes twice the area it would take at size 1.

A size 0.84 character takes 0.71 times the area of a size 1 character, and takes 1.41 times the area of a a size 0.71 character.
Size 0.59 is a similar “mean proportional” between sizes 0.5 and 0.71.
A size 1.19 character takes 1.41 times the area of a size 1 character, and 0.71 times the area of a size 1.41 character.
Size 1.68 is a similar mean proportional between sizes 1.41 and 2.

I tried to use my small sizes when quoting.
If I quoted something to which I was responding, I’d try to remember to put the quote in size 0.84.
If that quotation quoted something —— for instance a quote from someone (maybe me) to which they were responding —— I’d try to put the embedded quote in size 0.71.
If there was a quote embedded in a quote which was itself already quote-embedded in something I was quoting, I’d try to put the doubly-embedded quote in size 0.59.
I often tried to avoid triply-embedded quotes. But if and when I went ahead and used one, I’d try to put it in size 0.5.

I just left out quadruple-embedded and deeper quotes. I hypothesized they would be psychologically unnecessary.

So, maybe I should use sizes 1.14, 1.31, and 1.5, for “my big sizes”?
size 1.14, about (1.5)^(1/3)
size 1.31, about (1.5)^(2/3)
size 1.5
and just not have four of them?

size 1 size 1.14 size 1.31 size 1.5

size 1 size 1.144714242553332 size 1.310370697104448 size 1.5

size 1.09051
size 1.18921
size 1.29684

@Xhin:
Notice how the sizes bigger than 0.5 and smaller than 1 all appear smaller than 0.5, and all of the sizes bigger than 1 and smaller than 1.5 appear smaller than 1.

How do
Big
Bigger
Bigger yet
And probably illegally big
relate to the values in the inline size tag?
@Xhin
Is one ! the same as size 1.25, and two !! s the same as size 1.5?

So, by combining them, I could get
size 1.5625 (in effect!)
size 1.875 (in effect!)
and
size 2.25 (in effect!)
?

Is three !!! s a thing?

Is one line-leading ! really a thing, or did I misunderstand?

Maybe it’s two !! s that’s size 1.25, and three !!! s that’s size 1.5 .

Size 0.8 with two size 0.8 inside two
Size 0.6666667 within three size 0.6666667 inside three

Big
size 1.25

Bigger
size 1.5

No, the exclamation points make things bigger than the inline tag does.

Size 1.25 < two exclamation points < size 1.5 < three exclamation points.
