The day nintendo added death metal to one of their games (fire emblem heroes), my thoughts on FEH currently and I actually like fe

This thread is multiple topics that don't necessarily warrant multiple threads especially since the strategy forum is basically nonexistent now and because like only one other person that plays about FE is active here so I decided to throw it all into one thread. I have FE places for this but I wanted to make a thread here as well anyway.

The music

So basically fire emblem heroes is the only mobile game I played and I'm still playing it to this day despite... many very questionable directions it's taken. In it's 3rd arc this trailer was released which... the music used feels really out of place for fire emblem and it was kind of jarring but also amusing at the same time (forgive me if it's not actually death metal I just heard that somewhere and I'm not good at distinguishing between metal genres and even now also fair warning: this is a bit of fanservicey stuff in the trailer itself):

And a different version of this song is used against every boss in the main story of book 3. It is really jarring but somehow I don't mind it. That just seemed too odd for a nintendo game to not talk about Anyway...

fire emblem heroes

So fire emblem heroes is known as a gacha and this means that every month there are several new "banners" where you get to roll for new characters and they're often very powercreeped and while it's definitely possible to play and get by as f2p you very likely will keep falling behind even if you've been playing since the beginning. It's kind of at that stage where the powercreep is powercreeping the powercreep that was powercreeping powercreep. Basically if you pay money you get much higher chances of getting what you want whether it be the character you want or you just want the latest most powerful character. And while there is still love and care put into the art, character designs, story, things the characters say and even gameplay... to an extent it can get annoying to be f2p at times. And then there is the... ridiculous amount of things that are either fanservice or downright odd stuff that people understandably find offputting like a child character (and no I don't mean the 1000 year old kind) in a wedding dress. She's not marrying anyone and it's simply for tradition's sake canonically but you still have to wonder why someone thought it was a good thing in a game like this. Basically, FEH is still fun and I can still appreciate it for what it does well that isn't weird or bullshit but some of it is so weird now days and somewhat annoying and I wish FEH wasn't kind of setting the image of FE right now since it's a lot of people's first fire emblem game because fire emblem is much better than that. But speaking of things I have some mixed feelings about...

Fire emblem fates

Fire emblem fates is a game that I really didn't like even after watching videos of it and playing a bit of birthright (fates is 3 games in one basically: conquest, birthright, revelation and then there's story related dlc) because there were sooo many things in it that didn't feel like they belonged in fire emblem and would set a bad example and it just didn't look fun either. But once I looked past all of that and gave it another chance, I have to say that despite it's more... annoying elements (dating sim-tier stuff, weird out of place fanservice, plots that aren't resolved in the best way, ect) I have to say that I have come to like it from it's story to it's gameplay and to an extent support conversations and other things.

In short fates is a game where you have a custom avatar character that becomes torn between two warring kingdoms and must choice a side (or not choose a side). Which is certainly an interesting departure from the more straightforward games.

The thing about fates is, it was clearly meant to be much bigger than it was (and that's pretty big considering it's essentially 3 games in one with dlc). And the vast majority of the intended story and stuff was cut from the game entirely so it naturally does feel kind of unfinished. I do think that part of the reason I have come to like fates is that my imagination can fill in the blanks for what it could have been but I think that fates is actually good in it's own right and a lot of the criticisms I've seen of it are actually rather petty in the grand scheme of things. Fates really does what it does very well considering all of the things that went wrong while it was being made and while I would not suggest fates to beginners as it would probably set a bad example for the rest of the series, it has earned my love as an old fan who used to feel like the new games were ruining the series despite also legitimately saving it. Yes it has tons of arguable flaws and yes a lot of things could have been done better imo but honestly I've come to realize that a lot of things old fans would complain about with fates already existed in previous games sometimes in worse ways. Yes the weird fanservicey stuff and everything related to that feels out of place and annoying often times, but I can ignore it when it is.

So ya I regret talking shit on fates here and other places. Oh and Famov. I regret to inform you that I have crossed over to the dark side.

There are 3 Replies

I deleted Heroes from my phone sometime back in 2017, and just this last week finally re-downloaded it onto a tablet. There's definitely a lot more to it than there was, and it proved to be a good enough distraction while laying on my couch trying to recover from a cold. It's fun, but my old "team" (only 4 max level units) is certainly not strong enough for the more difficult challenges. I managed to summon rabbit Palla and it makes me feel like a bad person, but, you know, she was always my favorite Whitewing and she seems pretty good, especially next to the other people I have. I never did manage to get a Takumi.

That is absolutely okay. I wish I could like Fates more than I do, but my brief stint with Revelations was even less satisfying than Conquest, though admittedly I chose not to finish it. I'll give Hoshido a shot at some point, but ultimately I just don't think the game is for me.

Haha I know the feel. Anything that is not fates/awakening/heroes with fanservice stuff just feels extra weird. I wish they would just keep it to that at least. But ya she'll certainly help since you need everything you can get when you're new or just coming back.

I never did manage to get a Takumi.

Don't even worry about that. Takumi has fallen off sooooo much that he's become pretty bad actually. He also powercreeped himself 2 times over (not counting the one that isn't a bow user) and even after that all versions of Takumi are just mediocre at best because the meta has gotten that ridiculous. Hector on the otherhand also powercreeped himself a few times but all Hectors are at least decent still.

People seem to really hate revelation but I'm totally fine with it really. And birthright I mean a lot of people find that boring but it was nice too. I mean, it WAS less exciting than conquest in quite a few areas but I still liked the experience.

But if you do give it a shot good luck liking it. It could be that it's just not for everyone indeed though.
