Sony officially ends production on the PS Vita

Handheld’s last two SKUs discontinued as of March 2, 2019

Sony has ended production on the PlayStation Vita, effective today. The company announced that the platform’s two remaining SKUs have been discontinued on the Vita’s official product page.

The handheld’s pending demise was known well in advance; a Sony senior executive said last year that manufacturing and shipping of all versions of the device would end this year. Hiroyuki Oda also said at the time that there are no plans for any kind of a follow up, which seems obvious.

Sony stopped regularly publicizing individual platform sales in its investor reports in 2013, so there are no official numbers for how the PS Vita sold over its seven-year lifespan. Estimates by third parties have placed it somewhere in the range of 10-15 million units.

Sony itself stopped making games for the Vita in 2015, and in 2018 ended the production of physical media games for the device. February was also the last month that the PlayStation Plus subscription service gave out games for the platform.

The original PlayStation Vita (PCH-1000) launched in Japan on Dec. 17, 2011, and in North America on Feb. 15, 2012. A revised slimline model (PCH-2000) followed in 2013 and 2014. Though it advanced on the PlayStation Portable’s ideal of bringing console-quality video games, visuals and experiences to a handheld, the PlayStation Vita struggled for attention. Mobile video gaming at the time of its launch was flourishing on smartphones and tablets, making a dedicated gaming handheld more of a niche product than it was in the century’s first decade.

“Vita just didn’t reach that critical mass with the audience,” Shawn Layden, the chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s worldwide studios, told Polygon in a 2017 interview. “And thereby, the development community doesn’t get behind it, and thereby, the audience doesn’t come, and it’s a quick negative spiral effect.” https://www.polygon.com/2019/3/2/18246372/playstation-vita-canceled-discontinued-production-ended-ps-vita-sony

What do you guys think? Does/did anyone here play thier Vita on a regular basis and sad to see it go?

I think part of the vitas problems was SONY's choice to use expensive proprietary memory cards unlike the 3DS that used SD cards. SONY also never really advertised the PS Vita like they did with the PS3 and PS4 so I think alot of people forgot it even existed.

I owned two of them . (still have my aqua blue version) it id a beautiful system with a number of great games. Ahead of its time in some respects.

I have a modded one with a 256 gb micro sd card and 10 000 retro games and it's awesome. I also still have my legitimate one which has my collection of PS1 classics that I actually paid for.

I always loved my PSP and it got me through my AIT when i joined the Army back in 2007, but by the time the PS Vita came out I already had a 3DS and lost interest in handheld gaming. Then there was the expensive proprietary memory cards instead of sticking with the Memory Stick Duo sticks from the PSP so i never got one. By time I got interested in Mobile gaming again the Switch was out and again I already had a 3DS.

Maybe one day I'll grab a Vita but right now i'll be sticking with my Switch and 3DS.

God bless micro sd and the gadgets that allow them to be used in any device.

it's kind of crazy how the 3DS came out before the PS Vita and is still going strong with new releases while the Vita just quietly died.

Sony teleported behind it and said "Nothing Personal Kid" before they stabbed it.

Biggest betrayal in video game history.

Just means the Vita modding community is going to get even better because the firmware BS is going to end.

I had a PSP back in the day, and man that was an awesome system. For a while in 2008 it was my only source of Internet as well and I really got good at its weird but effective keyboard system.

I still have my PSP with quite a few games, and it still works! I also have a couple memory sticks full of PSone games I bought off the PS Store. It, along with my DS in 2007, got me through the first half of my 9 month Advanced Individual Training which is where you go after Basic Training to learn your Army job.
