Smoking causes kidney failure in millions of people. It also causes many other life threatening health problems.

Why do a lot of people smoke? and why do a lot of people continue to smoke knowing they will eventually be in a lot of pain from smoking related diseases?

It's the nicotine. Nicotine is ridiculously addictive; once you're hooked, it's crazy difficult to quit.

A combination of nicotine addiction and cultural leverage.

Actually, secondhand smoking is a notably large cause of cancer and other health complications. In addition, even people that aren't near you when they smoke are sacrificing their health and dragging down society in general by straining the medical industry and taxpayers for the sake of their personal affectation.

Which is why there are laws that restrict you from smoking in areas that would harm people's health, in most places at least. I can really only imagine second hand smoke being a threat to family members if the smoker is doing it inside the house, like my mom and stepdad do.

I agree it puts undo burden on society through medical costs, but if you want to go down that line of argument, you can make a case about a lot of things, like some specific unhealthy foods and alcohol.

I would agree. This is why I also encourage people to eat better.

How can you have this perspective on smoking / drinking but then want to legalize drugs like LSD / DMT?

Just so everyone knows, driving high is not the same as driving drunk. Inhaling cigarette smoke is also very different from inhaling marijuana smoke. While nobody has ever died of marijuana smoke (non-carcinogenic), a LOT of people have died from cigarettes. A LOT.

They are considerably different in multiple ways, so this isn't actually conflicting.

Firstly, tobacco and alcohol have no proven health benefits that I have seen evidence for, while classical hallucinogens are being strongly supported as having significant mental health benefits.

Secondly, alcohol and nicotine are dependency-forming substances while LSD and DMT are not.

Thirdly, legalization does not mean deregulation. I am not interested in them as a recreational substance and would not suggest that they be freely traded in any capacity/for any reason.

You encourage people to eat better because they're a burden on our medical and taxpayer systems?

I encourage people to eat better because it is a better choice for maximizing personal utility; part of the consequence of this is that they require less help from others and thus infringe less on me and my resources through the public policies of America (and thus my potential personal utility).
