Nintendo Switch has become the fastest-selling video game system of this hardware generation through 21 months, according to The NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. From its launch in March 2017 through November 2018, Nintendo Switch has sold more than 8.7 million units, outpacing U.S. sales of all other current-generation systems at the same point in their life cycles.
Nintendo is also the overall top-selling U.S. software publisher so far for 2018, according to NPD data through November. This performance should receive an additional boost from the December release of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimategame, which has become not only the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch game of all time, but also the fastest-selling game in the Super Smash Bros. series, with U.S. sales of over 3 million units in just 11 days, according to Nintendo’s internal sales data.
“We are thrilled to see such a strong reaction from consumers in the second holiday season for Nintendo Switch,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We’re looking forward to delivering more excitement and smiles to our fans in the coming year and beyond.”

The following data from Nintendo of America is specific to the U.S. only:

Nintendo hardware unit and dollar sales for 2018 are at their highest annual totals since 2011.
Nintendo eShop sales have grown 105 percent over 2017.
Evergreen Nintendo Switch games have set new milestones, with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe selling over 4 million and 5 million units, respectively. Super Mario Odyssey has sold over 4.7 million units.
In addition to the fast-selling Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game, other recently released games that continue to make a splash include Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!, which together total 2 million units, and Super Mario Party at 1.4 million.

Smash Bros Ultimate sells 5 million copies worldwide in its first 3 days!

This includes digital sales, and its not the amount shipped. Absolute crazy! It's the highest sellling smash bros game and it might have surpassed Smash 4 (on Wii U) lifetime sales.

Kind of funny to see the Switch doing so well when many, including the Pokemon CEO, had doubts about it.

They'd sell even more units if they would just port over Cory In The House already...

That's the kind of sales I like to see. Already puts the Wii U to shame. Also I find it kind of ironic that the Senior VP of Sales and Marketing for Nintendo happens to be surnamed Bowser...that, to me, sounds like if Sony hired someone named Jak Daxter.

I bet he has a Bowser statue on his Desk too.

Good for Nintendo. Played Smash while at my parents' house the past two days and had fun. I didn't have a lot of time with the system, but it's easy to see the polish that goes into their system and games. The dashboard of the Switch runs so much smoother than the Xbox One.

Looks like Nintendo's making a comeback. Hell, even Square Enix is getting in on the action.

Is the UI still barebones?

Yes it is. There aren’t even any themes yet like there are for the 3/2DS.

The new CEO of Nintendo now thinks Nintendo is on their way to sellling 20 switch consoles for its fiscal year (ending on the last day of March 2019), due to Smash.

"Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa recently held another quick interview with Japanese publication Sankei, in which he talked about Smash Bros. Ultimate and more. Here's what Mr. Furukawa had to say.

- fans of previous Smash Bros. games came out to support Smash Bros. Ultimate, which lead to a huge sales boost at launch
- Furukawa hopes to see the game continue to sell strongly into the future
- Furukawa says the goal of hitting 20 million Switch units sold this fiscal year is 'a little high,' but still doable
- Nintendo has three months left to achieve their goal"
