What if any is the limit on quote depth?

Quotes are allowed, of course.

in my experience quoted quotes are at least occasionally necessary, or almost so.

I can imagine someone needing to quote a quote which quotes, tho odds are with some thought they could get around it.

in my opinion a quote of a quote of a quote of a quote is of doubtful help, let alone necessity.

Some boards and mailing lists prohibit 5-deep quotes.

But what do Xhin, and the other sensei and sempai of gtx0-using, think?

Trying to post as chiarizio I get invalid password for chiarizio.

Posted February 2nd by _chiarizio

It works when I use _chiarizio.
About to try _eldin raigmore.

Posted February 2nd by _eldin raigmore

That worked! Now I’ll try eldin raigmore without underscore.
Didn’t work; told me invalid password for eldin raigmore

Not currently.

2 Can we search on reply-titles as well as post-titles?

Replies don't have titles, so no.

3 Can we search on the userIDs of the replier as well as the original poster?

Yes. Click their name (above the avatar) and it'll go to their "profile". From there click the "Threads" or "Posts" link in the "Posts" section.

Incidentally, more detailed profiles are a thing:
http://gtx0.com/read/user-profiles-feature
You might want to make one :)

5 Can we search for posts by contents?

6 Can we search for replies by contents?

I was hoping you wouldn't ask this. Not currently, no. Due to the size of GTX0's database, this kind of feature would either be:

  • Very slow and tie up server resources
  • Fast, but would take a loooot of time and work to index the current posts.

This is something I do want to fix eventually. In the meantime though if you're looking for something specific, I could do a search on my end and find the posts for you.

7 Can we set ranges for searching by dates? Say, after Feb 6 2016 but before March 17 2018 or something?

If you want to do that, try doing "After" "February" "6" "2016" and then sorting "Oldest first".

4 How does the search function work when the search string is a partial match to the title?

8 If we can enter two or more strings to search titles or contents for, can we choose whether to “AND” them or “OR” them?

The way the title search area is set up atm is kinda rudimentary. it does a partial search on the literal version of whatever you type in. So if you type in "search", it'll find this post, as well as foolster's "search for own posts" post, and also castrael's "quick search" post. If you type in "searches et" it'll find this post and nothing else.

I could certainly expand this feature pretty easily, how does something like this sound:

  • Keep the current functionality the same. "my conworld" searches for anything that contains the exact literal phrase "my conworld".

  • To search for multiple AND strings, separate them by commas, so "my,conworld" would return posts that have both "my" and "conworld" in the title (not necessarily in order).

  • To do an OR search, use forward slashes. "conworld/conlang" would return posts with either "conworld" or "conlang" in the title.

  • Combine the two by using both: "my/your,conworld" would return posts with either "my" or "your" in the title and also has "conworld" in the title.

Also, I can’t figure out how to quote a part of someone else’s post or reply, in my own.

Copy it and put > before it. Click "Edit" on this post to see how I'm quoting your post, for example. You can also surround the text with [quote][/quote] tags.

What if any is the limit on quote depth?

There aren't any limits on quote depth, but the lack of a "quote" button makes this not be a problem -- you just copy their reply to your quote, then they copy your reply to their quote, and so on, creating 1-depth quotes every time.

I've installed a "quote" button a few times (need to do it again probably), which will split their message into chunks, auto quote each paragraph, and strip out their quote tags. This also prevents the quote-depth problem.

There's really no sense in having the full quote context on every post -- if you're reading the post from start to finish you're going to be reading arguments and counterarguments in order anyway. Nested quotes is one of those things that makes posts really bloated. My design philosophy with GTX0 is to cut out as much bloat as possible so that replies can be really short if they want to be.

If you guys want to know how to do wacky stuff with the formatting read this stickied thread in the help forum

Combine the two by using both: "my/your,conworld" would return posts with either "my" or "your" in the title and also has "conworld" in the title.

The comma for AND and virgule for OR both look useful, and I would use them both.
But I’d hesitate to use both in the same search; weird operator-precedence effects might be unexpected and unintended.

Would it be too hard to add a BUT NOT or EXCEPT FOR kinda option on the searches?

    ———

Thanks, @Kaot0, to you as well.

(BTW @Xhin; did I do that quote right? I had to tell the software I was gonna edit your post to get in to copy it, then tell it I had changed my mind instead of entering your password. I hadn’t realised I could do that!)

I saw some polls I created on the CWBB, and answered for myself, that have been ported here to gtx0, but without my answers.
I answered one; but now I can’t find the others.

How can I find all the polls?

On the CWBB we didn’t have to put the word “poll” in the title.
Searching for “poll” turns up only “the Ballad of Harry Pollitt”.

    Posted February 3rd by chiarizio

@Xhin: The OP’s avatar & ID doesn’t appear at the top of a new thread, so I can’t look them up.
Also there’s no way, as far as I can tell, to just look up users and their profiles.
I would think the “people” button would lead me to some such feature. But if so I’ve so far been too dense and obtuse to figure it out.

    TL;DR who is GC/MS ?

Also: When I try to search replies by username, I only get threads started by that user.
Is there a way I can get all the replies by that user in the specified date-range or whatever?

For instance, I looked for all Feb 2019 replies by Xhin, and did not see the reply I was looking for; namely the above last reply to this thread.

    Posted February 7th by chiarizio

Oh, that’s what happens with “hottest”.
With “replies” it works like I was hoping.

    Posted February 7th by chiarizio

Some users still have weird things happen. For example if I search #85 by clicking "filter" nothing happens. If I hit "enter" while on the line it will find him.

Also, I can’t figure out how to quote a part of someone else’s post or reply, in my own

You can do the quote formatting but a lot of users (most I've found) add "=" to the beginning of a line to bold the whole line and show that as a quoted response. Most of us do it this way (well except Mr. S.o.h. because he's a contrarian ) because it's just what's familiar from a long time ago on the old site.

Yes, that quote looks good. You can also use the [quote][/quote] tag if you'd prefer. Some of the formatting requires a space in between the code and the text (things like !cyan for example), but the > apparently doesn't.

I saw some polls I created on the CWBB, and answered for myself, that have been ported here to gtx0, but without my answers.

If you can find the links to those again, I'll fix them.

Xhin The OP’s avatar & ID doesn’t appear at the top of a new thread, so I can’t look them up.

Also there’s no way, as far as I can tell, to just look up users and their profiles.

Hmm those are good points, I'll fix these issues next.

    TL;DR who is GC/MS ?

He's one of the posters here. Been here forever. I think his name stands for Gastrocolic Multiple Sclerosis or something.

Also: When I try to search replies by username, I only get threads started by that user. Is there a way I can get all the replies by that user in the specified date-range or whatever?

Change your "list type" to "Replies".

    @chiarizio: again.
