For me gambling was about distracting myself and filling the time. I had just graduated high school and got my first job as a busboy. I lived at home and had no bills to pay and the money to spend. My parents are gamblers so I had it in my blood and I went to the casino as soon as I could for my 19th birthday. It felt cool to be there, like I was James Bond in Casino Royale. Slots were my go-to. Table games seemed too daunting and I didn't know how to play anyway. With slot machines you literally just feed the money in and press a button. I'd sit for hours and piss away all the tip money I had earned picking up plates and scraping them into the garbage. Bets became bigger and bigger. I began to drink while I played. Security didn't bother I.D.ing me at the door anymore. It becomes not about the money but the thrill of the bet. I rarely ever won and if I did, I'd lose two-fold the next time. There's no sicker feeling than the drive home from a casino when you're snapped back into reality and you realize you've lost most of your paycheck for a few hits of dopamine and the psychological equivalent of jerking off into a napkin.

There is a good Philip Seymour Hoffman movie called "Owning Mahowny" which is based on a true story. I never got as bad as the guy in the movie but it really shows the layers of how fucked gambling can be.

My brother was $30 000 CAD in debt from gambling before he killed himself, and also an alcoholic and we believe he was into opioids. All these addictions lead to a really dark route and are obviously extremely dangerous. I used to go to the casino as well, and I enjoyed myself. But the difference between myself and my brother (and most people who go to the casino) I walk out when I win, and I walk out when I lose badly. I don't go to the ATM in the casino ever. That's my personal rule. I'm up about 5000 CAD.

I don't find gambling addictive for me. I used to go a couple times a year and haven't gone in a couple years. I think I might next time I'm in the big city though, play some Black Jack which is my game of choice. It also has some of the best odds in the casino. Only Baccarat beats it. I enjoy Baccarat as well but I find counting cards easier when it comes to Black jack.

I recently became a card dealer and for most blackjack tables we use six decks and an automatic shuffler and we reload the cards every few hands so counting cards is kind of mpossible. We have a couple tables that use 2 decks though. I haven’t learned Baccarat yet.

I bet they wait longer to shuffle the cards back in when the count is bad though. :)
