PlayStation 5 launches Nov. 12 for $499

The PS5 Digital Edition will be $399

The PlayStation 5 will cost $499 for the standard version of Sony’s next-gen console and $399 for the PS5 Digital Edition — the system without an optical disc drive — when it launches Nov. 12, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Wednesday during its PlayStation 5 Showcase livestream.

The Nov. 12 release date is for the consoles’ launches in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. They’ll become available on Nov. 19 for the rest of the world, Sony said.

Sony’s PS5 price announcement follows similar news from Microsoft, which announced the release date of its $499 Xbox Series X and $299 Xbox Series S earlier in September.

Here’s how that PS5 pricing compares to previous generations. Sony launched the PlayStation 4 at $399 back in 2013. That price point was much more palatable to consumers than the (infamously high) price of its predecessor, the PlayStation 3, which launched with models priced at $499 and $599. Prior to those platforms, Sony launched the original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 at $299.

Sony has been slowly rolling out details about the PlayStation 5 since the console was first detailed in April 2019. Since then, Sony has confirmed new details like the PS5’s logo, the next-generation DualSense controller, the console’s design, PlayStation 5 box art, and a long list of first-party and third-party games coming to the next-gen console.

Sonys line up is okay. I am interested in the new Final Fantasy, and while I didnt like the PS4 version the new Spider-man (Morales has energy powers in addition to spidey powers? thats new. Was not expecting that.) Demon Souls remake and God of War.

The pricing is interesting. The PS5 is weaker than the Xbox Series X but launching at the same price. Good luck to Sony. It appears that the best option to play exclusives is the digital edition (with some backwards compatibility for select titles)

But the best platform to break into the new generation is the Xbox series S...while it is weaker it is the most affordable option which includes access to three generation of digital games. (Current, Xbox One Gen, 360 Gen)

If I had to choose one for launch I would go for the Series S and wait until the PS5 Slim comes out to visit their exclusives at that point in time. None of the PS5 exclusives interest me enough to one to pick one up. (So far)

Has there been confirmation on their launch line up? Well any of them be launching on the PS4?

Here’s the full list, including pricing and confirmation for the first time that Sony intends to raise the price on some exclusive titles by $10 to a max of $69.99:

Astro’s Playroom (Japan Studio) – pre-installed on PS5
Demon’s Souls (Bluepoint Games / Japan Studio) – $69.99
Destruction All Stars (Lucid Games / XDEV) – $69.99
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales – $49.99
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Mile Morales Ultimate Edition – $69.99
Sackboy A Big Adventure (Sumo Digital / XDEV) – $59.99

Spider man will be launching on the PS4 too (I wonder what the difference between the Ultimate edition and regular edition is)

I think I would rather just pick up Spiderman on the PS4.

I think SONY is hedging their bets on both their current market share and having stronger launch lineup than the XBOX. Honestly I think the PS5 will do better out of the gate but the XBOX Series will do pretty well and maybe start to catch up once some exclusives games release for it.

Their launch line up is not that strong and their biggest hitter can also be found on PS4. (Spider-man MM) Their other biggest hitter (demon souls) is not meant for every one. (It is the easiest souls game though)

This years launch is going to be extremely interesting from the consumer perspective. Most families have been financially hit from the Pandemic and can only afford one console for their family if they opt to purchase one. The series S seems to be the best option.

I wonder if nintendo will be saying or doing anything in the coming months. It would be hilarious if they just announce more Switches for the same price of $300 but this time with a bunch of bundles for the holiday season. (BOTW, MK8, etc)

Thats true but XBOX doesnt really have any killer launch games either. The biggest appeal of the XBOX Series is the backwards compatibility, Price and gamepass. I mean i'll probably get a XSX or XSS before a PS5 anyway. But I can see the appeal of both consoles.

@SOH: It will, so no worries if you want to play it on different consoles or PC. I just prefer the simplicity of owning a console and owning a game physically. :)

Probably won't get a PS5 until Final Fantasy XVI launches, honestly....unless something more interesting releases.

However, I kind of need more information about XVI to be REALLY excited. The characters and story just weren't grabbing me from the trailer. Right now I'm getting a male-centric vibe and we kind of already tackled that in Final Fantasy XV. I actually got heavy FFXV and Final Fantasy Tactics vibes from it. I just need more info right now.
