Not that the other post really seem to be that engaging anyway but seemed like talking about Star Trek was just way off the topic...

It's the most legit mainstream sci-fi that I've ever seen. It deals with politics, ethics, humanity, moral choices and weird science.

Have you ever watched Babylon 5? It's very similar to Star Trek in many regards (including that it deals with all the things you listed) but has the benefit of being a very well constructed series. Most of it was planned out from the very beginning, most episodse were written by one guy and the episodes he didn't write he still had a heavy hand in so there's a lot of consistency. Etc. Etc.

I really like Star Trek (ToS not so much but TNG era absolutely) but I rate Babylon 5 much higher than it.

Also, have you been watching Star Trek Discovery?

I know i'm not nullfather but I would like to interject that I loved babylon 5. It was a great show that doesn't get the love it deserves. I also loved the mini movie they made.

Which one? (They did several).

I have not watched any Babylon 5, but I'll keep it in mind. I don't generally watch a lot of TV in the first place. Even though I've been making the time recently to delve into film serials like that, I've got a whole list of priorities (including the original X-Files series, which I've been watching to watch for years).

I've not watched any space stuff besides trek and I'm still going through that one. I'll keep Babylon 5 on my radar though along with Battlestar.

yes they did and I totally meant Movies but forgot the add the S. I'd have to go back and watch them to remember which one was my favorite, I watched them as a kid and loved them.

Lol that makes more sense Q.

along with Battlestar.

That's one that I still haven't gotten around to myself. People always tell me it was good though.

I'm a sucker for Stargate Atlantis. Don't ask me why.

It's because of Richard Dean Anderson. Just admit it.

Ha! I aint no fan boy. But I would follow that man into battle. (IIRC hes a honorary air force general)

David Hewlett was one of the reasons why I enjoyed the show so much.

lol RDA was barely in Stargate Atlantis though. I think he was in the pilot and then maybe a couple of guest appearances?

SG1 and Atlantis were great though. Stargate Universe took me a while to like it, and I'm still not convinced it should have been a Stargate show given how drastically different it was and how little they actually used the Stargate.

Actually moonray any time I picture you I think of rodney McKay . Idk why.

Lol. I have no idea why either.

Though because he's Canadian he does use a more British English than the rest of the characters... Like Zed instead of Zee.

I always feel bad that I never got into Star Trek, but, well, I never got into Star Trek. I wasn't into Farscape as a teenager, but haven't really been able to get into many sci-fi shows. I know Babylon 5 is supposed to be good, too. But I dunno. Something about it just doesn't connect with me... I'm a bad nerd...

I've watched some random episodes of Stargate. Never really got into it, but I found it entertaining enough. If I knew the characters better, I might be invested in it.

It's better if you watch it from the start. I had also seen a few random episodes before I watched it all the way through, and it was much better when I understood the characters and what was going on in the larger plot.

B5 is great though, definitely give it a chance.

I saw the Star trek NG episode "measure of a man" since it was recommended to me as a standalone episode.

Holy hell what an episode. Definitely will be checking out this series now.

I grew up watching Star trek Voyager. I remember liking it

Is "Measure of a Man" the Data focused episode? If it is the one I am thinking of then yea it's an amazing episode.

I think TNG and DS9 both have issues finding their footing during their respective first season, but really pick up after that. Not to say that they don't have good episodes in those first seasons, but they also have some really bad stuff too.

Yes, basically the episode is about whether or not Data should be considered a Life form or property of startfleet to dismantle and study. Definitely one of the best episodes of any of the Star Trek series.

Basically there are only a handful of really good episodes in the first few seasons as it had a rough start. But by season 3-4 the show really takes off and becomes great.

If anyone is going to get into Star Trek, start with TNG and then switch to DS9 as DS9 deals with alot of mature themes that are still relevant today such as War and the aftermath. It has alot of much Darker themes and Sisko is very much a less black and white protagonist as he is a person that believes the ends justify the means.

Voyager started off strong but towards the end it just got boring as every other episode was something about the borg so watch it after DS9.

Nothing worse than Pulaski and "Shades of Gray". But yeah "Measure of a Man" is one of the best ones early on.

I've actually been watching it all in order. Summer 2016 did TOS and TAS, Summer 2017 did the TOS movies, Fall 2017 did TNT, late fall started DS9 and honestly it's a bit of a slog for me. I think I just may be burned out now so I've taken a bit of a break. Though DS9 does have great characters.

"...... Fall 2017 did TNT,..."

Sounds dangerous, i'm glad you didn't blow yourself up.

"Though DS9 does have great characters."

I think I liked DS9 so much because it actually dealt with issues that the other trek series stayed away from. It also actually followed through with events that were foreshadowed so when the Dominion war kicked off it was once hell of a roller coaster ride.

I actually hate that there was never a movie after the series concluded.

The only problem with a DS9 movie (using spoiler tags because I am currently forcing Dooku to watch it)

Oops. Yeah I meant TNG.

Yeah I like how these characters are also flawed in DS9. It felt like absolutely no main characters in TOS and not many in TNG have flaws. These people aren't the best to be having their own ship. It feels more like a ragtag bunch.

After DS9 I plan on doing Voyager. Dunno if I will go beyond that. I still have TNG movies but I don't know where I'm gonna put them.

Voyager is ok but it's definitely the weakest of the three in TNG era.

Enterprise was very meh for its first two seasons (and god damn that awful theme music)... The Xindi Arc in season 3 was pretty cool and I kinda liked some of the stories they did in season 4.

Yeah I understand your point moonray about DS9's ending, But:

"I still have TNG movies but I don't know where I'm gonna put them."

Right after you finish TNG obviously!! lol

"Voyager is ok but it's definitely the weakest of the three in TNG era. "

Agreed. It had such great potential but failed to follow through IMO.

That's because the show had constant executive interference instead of letting the writers and producers make the show they wanted to make. Scott Bakula is such a great actor, they wasted his talents and the other supporting actors were all still very talented. There was supposed to be a storyline where T'Pol was supposed to find out she was half Romulan and it would be explored in a Federation and Romulan war. The Enterprise itself was supposed to receive a major refit similar to the TOS enterprise compared to the TMP refit enterprise. So basically the show got canceled right before it was really going to get good.

Yea... You would think having half your crew be Marquis terrorists AND being trapped in a part of space the Federation had no chance of ever exploring anytime soon would've allowed for so many opportunities... Even just the exploring the Delta Quadrant part left open so much opportunity.

It also felt to me that they kept redoing some plots, wasting time that could've been used on something interesting. Like they kept doing the Federation VS Marquis story. Every time they ended it in a way that made it feel like "ok, that's that dealt with now they can finally work together properly" and then the next season they'd come up with a new reason why these two groups could fall out...

The worst offender for me had to be that episode where 7 of 9 goes a bit insane and starts making up all these conspiracy theories and randomly everyone around her just believes them despite the years of trust the crew has built with each other prior to that.

Ah I didn't realise it had interference.

I had heard about the plans for Season 5, it would've been pretty cool. I actually felt like season 4 was a vast improvement over the first two seasons. A season about the Romulan War would've been really cool because they're the one faction of the "three major" factions that we never really saw the Federation at war with (we only ever heard about a past war).

Yeah I get what you are saying. I also think Voyager had to worst Series Finale out of all the series and that's including the god awful ST: Enteprise finale. The forced love story between Chakotay and 7of9 was trash, I mean they spent almost 4 years butting heads. Chakotay questioned Captain Janeway's reasoning to keep 7of9 onboard several times yet he falls in love with her in the span of 2 episodes? Atleast Paris and Tores had a couple seasons of them flirting back and forth before they fell in love making it much more believable.

And then they Wrote Nelix out 3 or 4 episodes before the finale. Just wasn't the same without him there.
