We're gonna need a bigger boat.

In null's canterlot wedding post you mentioned that those were not a good example of MLP episodes.

I'm not a brony, doubt I'll ever be one, have never seen the show, but I'd like to take the same challenge. What episode would you recommend instead?

I also said that I haven't watched that show in a long time now. You'd be much better off asking someone who is still involved in the fandom like Mariomguy. Thing is though, I remembered that episode he suggested to Null and I remembered thinking it was not great at all. You'd probably just be better off getting a different opinion I think. But I only remember episodes that were more serious and plot and/or action-focused specifically probably because even before I stopped watching it there were way too many episodes.

So ya I'm really not the best person to ask especially being out of the loop for at least several years I think. However, I could suggest you one or two of those episodes that are specifically plot and/or action-focused if you really want me to.

That'll work.

I'll include very basic descriptions based on what I remember but I'll put them in spoiler tags just in case you don't want that.

Well for the episodes I mentioned, Twilight's kingdom part 1 and 2 were memorable . the problem is though you won't quite understand why stuff that is happening IS happening if you didn't see previous episodes. You may also not be able to appreciate it as well, which brings me back to another (mind you these aren't the only episodes you'd have to see to have the context):

The return of harmony part 1 and 2.

And the last one I remember at the moment is the cutie map part 1 and 2.

Also you should make a new thread after you're finished watching whatever imo. It's probably thread-worthy regardless of your reaction.

YAY! Time to make Xhin a Brony!!!!

The first episode I always direct new people to is A Canterlot Wedding. It's the season 2 finale that introduces a couple characters and seamlessly integrates the main cast. It's a very mature episode back when the show finally figured out its bearings. It's widely regarded as the greatest finale of the entire series, and you don't need to watch anything else before seeing it. Lauren Faust officially left the show that season, so they intended to go with a bang. The bar was set so high with that one. There are darker episodes, there are more mature and relatable episodes, and there are funnier episodes... but there aren't better episodes.

If you're just coming in, a few others that would be fun to try:

Season 1
Green Isn't Your Color
The Cutie Mark Chronicles
Party of One

Season 2 - Basically all of it. Avoid Secret of My Excess, Baby Cakes, and Dragon Quest. Special recommendations to Lesson Zero and A Canterlot Wedding.

The show gets a lot more self-aware during season 3 and there are MAJOR changes after it, so I wouldn't suggest anything past season 2 for a first episode.

Also while I think I like Twilight's kingdom in general more than the other two I mentioned, I should also point out that's the episode to go for if you're looking for DBZ style action lol.

Twilight's Kingdom would really spoil a LOT of other seasons, though. Maybe because I've seen all the episodes during its run I can appreciate the references in heavy episodes like A Royal Problem and Slice of Life, but I would never recommend episodes like that to a newcomer. That's the kind of thing that only gets better the more you know the show.

Lesson Zero was especially funny when it first came out, but it's impossible to recreate that feeling watching backwards. The show dropped E/I requirements starting season 2. One of the requirements was the main characters had to learn a lesson and explain it every episode, along with a list of other things preventing violence. This was solved by having Twilight write a letter to Celestia what she learned. As soon as the show didn't have to do any of that anymore, the writers just ran with it! Maybe not the best "first" episode, but holy hell it's too good to pass up!

Also... you didn't like A Canterlot Wedding?

esson Zero was especially funny when it first came out

Oh ya I remember that one now. It was decent.

Also... you didn't like A Canterlot Wedding?

I mean I liked the villain at least in some way but it felt way too generic for me in a way. Like this is a stereotypical wedding episode where something goes wrong and ultimately love saves the day and shit. I mean it had some action, and it had some higher points but I really didn't care much. Like so much of it was just stuff I didn't care about and then when it got to the plot it was like... well not great. Maybe I could go into more detail if I had a bit of a refresher on everything but ya didn't like it much.

I guess I'll do the canterlot wedding one first, then do one of knuckles' picks. I'll make threads for whatever I watch.

Here's a list of my favorites. Note these are just good episodes to watch, NOT good ones to start with:

The wedding is generic?! Come on! I know wedding episodes are overdone, but this episode aired one year before the Red Wedding episode in Game of Thrones.

Let us know how it goes, Xhin!

Will do.

So... did it happen?

Nope not yet, but I'll add it to my GTX0 list.

OK... so, the season 8 finale is very intriguing! If you're getting into the show now, it's building up steam again, recapturing a lot of the same surprises the early seasons did! It's officially on hiatus until further notice for next season.
