Kingdom Hearts discussion post (spoilers from every kh game)
Posted: Posted July 24th by -Riku-

We're roughly six months away from the release of Kingdom Hearts 3 and I am STOKED! I've played through 95% of the available Kingdom Hearts games (the exceptions being Re: Chain of Memories, Coded, Re: Coded, and the HD Remastered edition of Dream Drop Distance for reasons I'll explain later on) and have kept up with the overall story pretty well and I've fully embraced all the ridiculous twists and turns the franchise has taken. I first got into the series through the first game on the ps2 in late 2002 or early 2003, can't remember which, and I loved it! My dad ended up buying me this guide sheet which gave you some cool info such as where the dalmatian puppies were, how to beat the white mushroom game, trinity locations, boss info for the secret bosses, and a bunch of other stuff. It was laminated and had a front and back side to it. I also remember playing Chain of Memories for the Gameboy Advanced and I had to cheat in order to get past the Riku Replica the third time around. I kept dying so I used a friend's gameshark and I guess I maxed out all my stats and stuff cause after that I walked through every enemy just fine. The Riku story I completed without cheating and I don't remember much more about the game other than the story. KH2 is easily my favorite PS2 game, and maybe favorite overall game, ever! It took everything from KH1 and made it 100% better. I still love this game to this day and I love playing the Final Mix version on my ps4 because it takes the things I'm familiar with and adds on all the new content stuff from the International and PAL version for the ps2 that I never got. Birth by Sleep, 365/2 Days, and Dream Drop Distance didn't resonate with me as much as the first three games did, but I still enjoyed them.

My favorite moments from the series are as follows: fighting Roxas in TWTNW, fighting Sephiroth in either of the two main games, being able to skip the cutscenes in Disney Worlds because I honestly don't care about the Disney plots since I've seen the movies or played through the games enough times to know what the heck is going on, being able to play as member of the Organization as well as Mickey in Days, and I've enjoyed watching Riku's character grow throughout the games.

In terms of least favorite to favorite here's my list:

7) Re: Chain of Memories, Coded/Re: Coded, Re: Dream Drop Distance, and Union X

6) 365/2 Days

5) Chain of Memories

4) Dream Drop Distance

3) Birth By Sleep

2) Kingdom Hearts 1

1) Kingdom Hearts 2

The reason I haven't played any of the games in last place are for the following reason:

The coded games have had no impact on the story overall

Union X has a story hidden beneath LAYERS of repetitive missions and can just easily be viewed with the release of Kingdom Hearts 2.8 FCP

Re Dream Drop Distance still includes you taking care of the dream eaters which was frustrating enough on the 3DS with its dual screen and I'm not putting myself through that kind of hell again.

I did try to play Re Chain of Memories but I just couldn't get used to having three dimensional movement with that battle system. It just felt wrong.

As for 0.2 Fragmentary Passage, it's a demo. It's a glorified demo that tells a five minute story and isn't a game in and of itself.

I always loved the Disney cutscenes and the voices from the original actors and actresses cant imagine why anyone would want to skip them.

I enjoyed them the first time I played the games, but I honestly don't care about there single plots compared to the grand plot of the franchise.

I only ever played the first one and only got as far as Peter Pan world. They're great and have a cool concept but I remember getting lost in the worlds quite a bit, like a lot of the sections within each world looked the same. That could just be me being retarded.

No, that was definitely a problem in the first game. They changed it with kh2 so the worlds are easier to navigate

Recently bought the KH3 bundle on PS4 that comes with 1.5 +2.5 and 2.8 and KH3 preorder. I like that they fixed the controls in KH1 and it's a good remaster so far.

You're really missing out on avoiding that demo, though. It surprised me in how fun and well-designed the levels were (puzzles and interactive environments seen mostly in the original game combined with the combat of the second game). That demo alone got me re-excited for Kingdom Hearts III. It was that good. I am still genuinely surprised.

Most of the spinoffs are terrible, though I always liked Namine's character in Chain of Memories and felt Sora went through a genuine character arc. Sora has had little to no development since Chain of Memories. I guess he really took Kairi's advice to heart when she told him, "Sora, don't ever change."

The first game is still the best one. It's an unpopular opinion, but I prefer the more grounded and weighty combat of the first game over the floaty combat of the sequel. Plus, level design was far more interesting in the first game. Clunky at times, but it beats the shit out of flat maps that are just boring scenery to traverse through and fight enemies as seen in KHII. I don't think gameplay in KH1 is perfect, but the game had an atmosphere and intrigue that the sequel just lacks, you know?

Anyway, I am excited for KHIII. I think the story is going to be shit, but the gameplay and seeing Disney brought to life in an action RPG world will surely make up for it. Oh, and hopefully the music is a godsend.

Oh I've played the demo. I just wasn't impressed with the story of it

Well, yeah. The story has been in the shitter for a long time. Plus, Aqua is boring as shit. So is Terra. Ventus is okay, but that's mostly because Jesse McCartney can actually do voice acting.

It was the gameplay in the demo that impressed me. It seemed to combine the best of Kingdom Hearts 1 with the best of Kingdom Hearts 2 with a dash of Birth by Sleep and Dream Drop Distance. The gameplay has me stoked for the third main entry.

Jesse McCartney really dodged a bullet when he opted not to star in that awful Last Airbender movie didn't he?

I'd say so, yeah. I've never actually watched that movie, but Avatar is one of the greatest shows ever made. So...the movie is something I've always avoided.
