I don't know when it began exactly. Overwhelming negativity on the internet isn't exactly new in 2018. However, over the past few weeks I've become increasingly bothered at the toxicity and negativity on the internet. It's a problem because it can actually affect my own ability to enjoy things.

A good example is Sea of Thieves. In spite of the majority opinion that the game is trash and empty or whatever people are saying, I've been having quite a bit of fun playing the game with my brother-in-law. But anytime I go into a post or a tweet about the game, all I see is people trashing Rare, proclaiming the game is dead, a waste of $60, Xbox failed again, etc. Then Rare come out with a roadmap for future content plans. I read the roadmap before seeing any comments and am excited about the ideas that they talk about in the roadmap. Cool, more content and it's free. I go into the comment section and see comments about how the update was too vague, nothing was really announced, oh wow a new AI glad I spent $ on this game, really you're going to do that instead of my brilliant idea, etc I'm sure you've seen these comments plenty of times before.

Then there's twitter. Jee golly. I follow a lot of MMA fighters. Any time a fighter posts or someone even posts about a fighter, the top comments will be a gif of the fighter being knocked out. Then the comments break out into gif wars of the fighter winning and losing and people being condescending to each other.

Halo 5, one of my favorite games in recent memory, gets shit on any time it or 343 are whispered. MGS V, another of my favorite games in recent years, gets the same treatment.

I want to just step away from it all. I think I will try to stay out of comment sections for now.

I personally loved MGSV. Best gameplay in the series by far. Sure, the story was incomplete, but that gameplay was top of the line.

I was once told by some so-called experts that trash talking and taunting goes with the enjoyment of sports....not that that ever made sense to me. So....I guess what I'm trying to write is that negative, trashy comments for MMA fighting kind of comes with the territory.

Honestly people just want to bash on whatever they can. Honestly I rarely read what people comment on videos or posts on twitter because there will always be trolls that want to start shit just because they can.

The only time I like to look at comments that are trashing someone on twitter it's when it's against EA because screw EA lol.

People normally don't comment unless they feel negatively about something.

"Don't feed the troll." - This works wonders. Also, don't be afraid to go against the crowd. You'll probably find a lot of people who agree with you who, just like you, were too afraid of posting their opinion for fear of ridicule.

I'm not as negative like those people but I find that I do have areas of critique where I say stuff like "oh if they only would have added this", "this game is great but I miss the fact that x", etc. My wife just asked why I was so negative to movies and video games and in my opinion I love them but I always have areas where I felt like things could be increased. I don't want to sound like someone who just says every game that they enjoy is "good" or "great". I give caveats, too.

For other people, I think they're just insecure of their own purchases or want to protect their ability to be "right" so they just shit talk everything else. Even the people who love playing Smash Bros. will absolutely TRASH any game that isn't Melee. Toxicity is getting out of control a bit but I think people are being hyperbolic and don't actually feel the way they describe.

I've literally heard people say that Team Fortress 2, the free online multiplayer game that serves as one of Valve's biggest draws and which is promoted above all others on the world's largest digital games distribution service, is dead.

When people don't like something, they tell the creator.

When people do like something, they tell others.

When trolls and idiots don't like something, they tell everyone, especially when they aren't asked for their shitty, useless opinion.

I swear I am not trying to pick on you and I am not trying to derail the topic of Vandy's post by bringing in more Negativity, but is that a statement you really want to stand behind?

As a proscriptive instead of descriptive, yes.

Interesting...... I see nothing proscriptive in what you said. Your statement is very much descriptive but this is neither the time or place for that discussion. Just know that I disagree with your statements and that you have done exactly as you described.

Anyways, onto a more positive note - Vandy are you feeling better about this issue?

No. But I want to be clear that I have no problem with criticism. Of course, everything stands to have room for improvement. And I get annoyed by things too, like I hate certain maps in Halo and groan to myself when they are picked. I guess I just dislike when communities struggle to have anything positive to say about something. They only know how to demand more, or tear down what has already been given.

I remember in the most recent season of Game of Thrones there was a lot of criticism about character fast traveling among other things. I acknowledge that the show has taken a very different approach from the books in the past 3 seasons, but I still thoroughly enjoy every episode. I would have to stay out of internet discussions after seeing largely negative comments about the show week after week. Because I watch the show and think, "wow that was cool," then go online and see everyone complaining about fast traveling, this doesn't make sense, Jaime would never do that, night king auto aim, etc. It just brings me down from feeling good about what I felt before being influenced by negative people.

A lot of it is valid criticism but I prefer to just enjoy content for what it is and move on instead of viewing every frame under a microscope and pointing out everything that is wrong and proclaiming that the directors are morons. With these things, it's probably more about peoples' delivery of their criticism rather than the criticism itself. Because I actually agree with a lot of it. I just don't want to let it overshadow the fact that I really like the overall product.
