Interesting possible explanation for Cortana's state in Halo 5
Posted: Posted June 28th by Vandy

tldw; during Cortana's staycation with the gravemind at the end of Halo 2, it planted seeds of something called the "logic plague" within her that is seemingly coming to fruition in Halo 5. More details of this are explained in the second video above that came within a recent loot crate from 343. Basically a prophet was captured by the UNSC and interrogated after the events on High Charity during Halo 2. This prophet mentions an encounter with a human AI (Cortana) detailed below:

The prophet says that they did not use AI because they knew that the flood could infect them and turn them into something even worse than the flood.

Anyway, just some cool info I came across this morning that I thought I would share. Halo 5's story wasn't the greatest but this context does make it more interesting in my mind. The fact that this info was released at the end of 2017 leads me to believe that it will play a role in Halo Infinite.

The biggest problem I have with this theory is that Cortana spent very little time with Gravemind between Halo 2 and Halo 3. At the height of its power, it took the Flood 40+ years to convince Mendicant Bias to turn on its creators. Cortana certainly doesn't compare to the pinnacle of Forerunner ancilla technology, but I'd like to think she'd last longer than a couple of weeks against a relatively weak Gravemind.

At least it would be an explanation though.

I do find that whole exchange to be a bit odd. My Halo lore is a bit rusty these days and I haven't kept up with much EU stuff since Halo 4, but that prophet strikes me as strangely knowledgeable compared to what I remembered. Aren't the covenant supposed to be so ignorant of Forerunner history / technology that they don't realize activating the Halo array is equivalent to mass suicide? But here this random prophet is just spouting off about logic plagues and the forerunner-flood war.

It's also a little odd that he says AI were 'verboten' (forbidden) in the Covenant. I thought they had AI, but they were basically limited / shackled in some way. We even see Guilty Spark talk to one of them in one of the H2A terminals.
