This was one of Cetasaurus's ideas.

Basically the idea is to have a team that:

  • When someone returns to the site, welcomes them and is generally friendly.

  • Welcomes actual newcomers to the site, pointing them to introduction threads / helpful resources.

  • Other things possibly. @Cetasaurus: ?

  • There are 10 Replies

Also to make it easier I could probably write up something that distinguishes new usernames and those that haven't posted in, say, six months or more.

I just wonder how you're going to tell a new user from the random names. I know new users happen but still. Because from what I recall mods couldn't tell who is who either.

Sometimes we can tell, sometimes we cant.

Best idea is to just assume one or the other based on context and/or come up with some kind of generalized welcome message that addresses both.

Also I would myself like to be part of the welcoming committee. I think I kinda need to be; something about having the site owner welcome you is pretty neat.

I'll give them a big welcome straight between the eyes

I always try to welcome people that I recognize and ask them to stick around. I ask what games they have been playing, etc.

I nominate myself to never join this committee ever :|

But if a welcoming aesthetic is what you want...

The top of the site could definitely use some uniformity.

You have one section with the rainbow, another section with squished images and one gif, and the final section with aligned tables and pure text. I prefer plain text myself. But whatever the case it needs to mesh better.

(Also tag me if you reply, I don't see myself entering this post again on purpose)

You have one section with the rainbow

The rainbow is supposed to mesh baldly. Each piece of news is supposed to catch your attention -- if there's a lot of it it's kinda distracting but that's okay.

and the final section with aligned tables and pure text.

Those sections are going to be removed once things are integrated better, leaving only the quicklink bricks and the rainbow.

The problem is unity and organization: when you have too many announcements and they're all horribly different colors, your eyes don't know how to organize all that information properly. Everything that belongs together should fit together, and the colors should mean something.

Having the space on top of the page is a great thing to draw your attention to them, but I really don't like having the two ads stacked on top of each other. It would be really cool to move those ads to the top of the sides and put some artwork in the header. A logotype for Gametalk with a background that can continue running down the sides. I've been touting the idea of having a mascot run from page to page as a visual connection between all the different forums for quite some time, now. It would encourage users to visit multiple forums. If you're capable of parallaxing along the side bars, we can also put certain Easter eggs on longer threads (length of 10, 30, 50, and 100 replies).

Xhin, I'll make a new thread discussing aesthetics later. I already have some concepts in mind I've seen on other pages!
