World War Z in a fantasy setting.

I'm pretty much on the same page as The Bandit. I thought they did some tension stuff pretty well, especially the opening ten minutes. But yeah. I'm not as angry, mostly because I don't have that much investment in GoT, but boy, was this a boring episode otherwise.

Guess I'll put the rest in spoilers, just in case.

My initial impression was that this episode kinda sucked. Like, I don't think there was anything I'm all that interested in at all that happened in it. But maybe it'll grow on me as I think on it more. I suppose I'll be back to comment when I have time to talk about it, but I'm not satisfied in the least as of now.

I don't know what the writers could have done to satisfy me with this episode. So I guess I shouldn't be overly critical. But...that was simultaneously a little surprising and overwhelmingly disappointing.

Words can't express how fucking enthralled I was throughout most of this episode, only to be so swiftly left disillusioned by the ending. Already seeing everyone toasting to victory and preparing to march on KL in the next episode teaser (which I don't usually watch, but had to out of sheer disbelief) actually has me reeling.

What a huge, huge disappointment the conclusion to the White Walkers and the Night King has been. Even Bran's arc feels like it has ultimately served little purpose.

Other "smaller" things that bothered me:

I used to defend D&D, because generally the structure of the show was a well-oiled machine (despite some hiccups), they'd contributed to new material that worked really well, and - for the most part - they condensed a convoluted book narrative quite effectively. I especially thought Benioff had it in him as a writer, because his City of Thieves book showed as much. But ever since they announced they wanted to end the show at Season 8, and talked about moving onto a new project they were already preparing for, it's like they stopped giving a shit. Consequence and purpose was abandoned long ago, in favour of pure spectacle, hype, and being unexpected for the sake of it. It's a shame no one else could've been handed the reigns around Season 5 or 6, and helped steer the show back on course. If only GRRM were interested in writing two different versions of story!

Overall pretty disappointed. Night King and his friends should not have been finished in one episode.

First ten minutes were the best part.

I'll say more later when I have more time to think about it.

I see a lot of people hating on George Martin, but do we *know* he isn't working on the last book? Like, I really understand the frustration as a fan, but like, especially if it's going to be a huge book, couldn't he be still working on it, or possibly getting through the editing?

Edited April 29th by Orion Nebula

if they wanted that ending to be unexpected,

also it was kinda gratifying to see the entire internet complain about it being hard to see. My shitty sight made the first half or so kinda boring at times because I just couldn't follow what the hell was going on through most of the fighting. Quick-cut scenes are bad enough, but in the dark with blowing snow? Yeah, wonderful. Fuck off and come back in the morning, undead army.

so, I mean...I do hate that it looked the way it did, but it was nice to see that it wasn't just me.

myself, I'm not excited so much as I am curious. Like...I want to see the rest, but it's not because I expect it to be great or even satisfying. If I could accelerate the completion of the books by delaying the rest of this season, I'd be open to it (he's got some nerve publishing other books before finishing The One Everyone Is Waiting For).

Is this supposed to be a pun of the ACTUAL E3? VIDEO game of thrones!

Posted April 30th by Weid man
Edit Filter Quote Report

Yeah, my initial impression hasn't changed. It was a surprising episode, but only in the sense that they didn't do much of anything inventive with it--I had really expected more after last week's lovely episode. I've seen a fair amount of people who loved the episode, which I just can't really understand. Like, pure action is fairly low on my list as to why I watch things, so I'll often rate a battle episode/movie lower than most ("Battle of the Bastards," for instance, or "Infinity War")...but the action in this episode didn't even seem that good to me. Even setting everything else aside, I'd take any of the other major action sequences in the series over this one in a heartbeat, and those typically had other things that set them apart ("Blackwater" had the nice drunk Cersei and Sansa scenes as well as showcased Tyrion's talents, for instance--they could have done something similar with the crypts, but...).

What I liked:

Things I didn't:

I used to defend D&D, because generally the structure of the show was a well-oiled machine (despite some hiccups), they'd contributed to new material that worked really well, and - for the most part - they condensed a convoluted book narrative quite effectively. There was a time, back when Season 4 was airing, that I genuinely thought the show would shortly surpass the books in quality. After all, it was firing on all cylinders back then, while we were entering the two books that had a noticeable dip. Plus, like you said, D&D had shown the ability to make changes that genuinely improved on the source material (Cersei being more nuanced, Margaery getting a lot more development, the conversations between Arya and Tywin, etc.). Unfortunately, we all know what happened the next season. And it didn't start with them running out of material, it started with them doing a poor job adapting what were the strong points of the latter two books (Prince Doran, the "The North Remembers" plotline, Dany's first ride on Drogon). I quickly went from "oh, I can wait for the next book, because the show will sate my appetite" to being eager to get The Winds of Winter because I realized how much better of a writer GRRM is than D&D. Of course, the book itself has not come quickly, but I can't imagine it's easy to write a novel with such expectation and detail.

The really bizarre thing is that GRRM thought he would have the book finished by October of 2015. From what I gather, it basically was finished, but he did not like a lot of it so began rewriting a lot of material. Once he starts rewriting, it affects many other plotlines that then also need to be rewritten. And so on.

This page provides a timeline of all-known status updates for TWoW:
https://warsandpoliticsoficeandfire.wordpress.com/2016/07/12/the-ulimate-winds-of-winter-resource/
Here is a rather sad quote from the New Year 2016 update he posted:

We all wanted book six of A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE to come out before season six of the HBO show aired. Assuming the show would return in early April, that meant THE WINDS OF WINTER had to be published before the end of March, at the latest. For that to happen, my publishers told me, they would need the completed manuscript before the end of October. That seemed very do-able to me... in May. So there was the first deadline: Halloween.

Unfortunately, the writing did not go as fast or as well as I would have liked. You can blame my travels or my blog posts or the distractions of other projects and the Cocteau and whatever, but maybe all that had an impact... you can blame my age, and maybe that had an impact too...but if truth be told, sometimes the writing goes well and sometimes it doesn't, and that was true for me even when I was in my 20s. And as spring turned to summer, I was having more bad days than good ones. Around about August, I had to face facts: I was not going to be done by Halloween. I cannot tell you how deeply that realization depressed me.

I vividly remember watching the Season 5 finale, with all of its cliffhangers, and mentioning that the writers were ending every plotline that way so that The Winds of Winter could come out in between seasons. How strange it is now, looking back four years later and remembering how certain it seemed that I'd have a chance to read the sixth book before the next season came out. I remember reading that very blog post you quoted, and the words "The Winds of Winter is not finished" hit me like a hammer blow. Now, of course, multiple years have passed in which no one was expecting the book to drop at all.

I'm not pissed at GRRM. I can't imagine doing what he's doing--writing a novel, any novel, is an enormous undertaking, let alone one with all the complexities and expectations that this one had. Mainly, I'm just jaded. I'd be stunned if this series ever got completed at this point, though I do expect we'll eventually see The Winds of Winter itself released.

Posted May 3rd by white lancer
Edit Filter Quote Report

It seems he feels a lot of pressure to deliver on the tail end of the book. That's why he has to keep rewriting things, because it just doesn't seem good enough for him. I can't blame him for that. He wants the book to be great.

A lot of people think that we may get TWOW but no chance of getting ADOS. I think if he can get past TWOW then most of the complications will be cleared and the path to the end will be easier for him. Based on his latest updates, he seems to feel good about the progress he is making. I'm optimistic and think we will get an announcement of its completion this year. Whether it will actually release this year is another thing entirely.
