That blurry little smudge is one of the most awesome things I’ve ever seen. At last the first ever actual photograph of a black hole - or as close as we’ll ever come to one. It’s not Sagittarius A* like everyone thought it would be, but an even bigger one in a galaxy 50 million or so light years from us. Why they chose that instead of our own SMB I do not know. Nevertheless you are looking at the edge of space, time, and scientific understanding. The reason why it is brighter on one side and darker on the other is because the material orbiting it is spinning so fast that the light is red shifting. Straining out and dimming red as it moves away from our view and bunching up & glowing blue-ward as it approaches.

The very existence of black holes is already kind of a mindfuck when you try to think about the implications of their existence and stuff like time slowing down when you get close to one. But now the first picture we see just looks like an eye. Not that it looking like an eye has to mean anything but still.

It makes me extremely hopeful. We can look back now at all the smudged, vague images from scientific achievements past that we now have high-definition footage of. It's only going to get better.

Maybe one day when we have developed Quantum Drive we can investigate it closer.

That's pretty awesome.

I have seen the gates of Oblivion, beyond which no waking eye may see.
