Devin Townsend reveals that he spent $170,000 of his own money on the production of his new album, politely asks fans to buy it

Lately I've been realizing just how little a lot of my favorite bands make from their music. Last year, Ne Obliviscaris reported that they keep themselves afloat but not much more - and they're one of the more promising newer bands. It was a major ordeal for Daughters to produce their latest album because they lived in different states at the time and it was prohibitive for them to take the time and money to travel to each other. When Kayo Dot tried to take the material that they had created in their previous iteration as maudlin of the Well (a project that has produced some of the most impressive metal of the 21st century) and turn it into an album, they had to crowdfund it - and most of the money was provided by one of their fans forwarding the profit from his online poker hobby.

These people don't make a significant amount of money and it makes me sad.
