Release 05/25/2018

Bandai Namco has confirmed that Dark Souls Remastered is being released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on May 25. This is in addition to the Nintendo Switch version of Dark Souls Remastered revealed during the surprise Direct event. According to a press release, Dark Souls Remastered is being developed by From Software, the studio behind the original trilogy, instead of being outsourced to a third-party studio.

"Experience the rich world of Dark Souls in upscaled 4K resolution with 60FPS when playing on a PlayStation 4 Pro system, Xbox One X, and PC," reads the press release. "Also, 1080p resolution with 30FPS is available when playing the game on Nintendo Switch with its TV mode."

I am very interested to see how well the Switch version performs.

I was about to say, "Whatever..." but if they can even just stabilize the frame rate throughout, I'll almost certainly get it. Not new for $60, but at some point.

I am more curious to see if it will include all the DLC.

I would pick it up again.

The direct nintendo dropped was okay.

Well, once Nintendo releases the 64Gb game carts there will not be a reason that games dont include all the DLC that is released for other systems. Only problem is they have been delayed until 2019.

Isn't there just the Artorias of the Abyss DLC? Don't see why the remaster wouldn't include it.

I have to admit, I cannot imagine playing Dark Souls in a small screen, traveling. The levels sometimes get pretty poorly lit, and so much of it is about seeing things coming. I know the screen is probably pretty close to your face, but I just can't imagine some of those fights on a small screen. But I suppose my eyes aren't what they used to be either.

I'm guessing:

Switch- 30 FPS (docked); framedrops while portable until a patch or two come out.
XBox/PS- 60 FPS
PC- 60 FPS initially; unlimited (hopefully) after some tweaking that won't mess with the engine.

Out of the few problems I have with my Switch, screen size is not one of them. Can also increase/decrease brightness while undocked. Not sure if that would be enough to help with darklit areas. *shrug*

The framerate is stopping me from picking in up on the Switch.

40 dollars for a remaster of a 7 year old game..... Bit of a steep price imo.

I think the Skyrim Special Edition was the same price.

It is a remaster though, so $40 is about where I expected the price to be on release. Just wait like a year or so and it will be down to at least $30 probably.

Remasters usually include all of the game’s dlc along with upgrades to the graphics and audio. When you compare the price for the remaster, it is usually the same as buying the original game new and then buying all the dlc separate, and then you don’t get he upgrades.

Obviously you can but the games used and then get the dlc at a cheaper price and on pc you can download mods. But remasters are aimed for people that want the game with all its content with a fresh coat of paint and no fuss.

30fps while the other consoles are 60fps is a bit of a bummer.. But its 1080p like xbone and PS4 OG at least. I wonder how it will hold up in graphical fidelity too.

Then again, the original game on ps360 is 30fps and 720p resolution

Hopefully it has improved visuals on switch. Thee's a rumor that the remaster is running on dark souls 3 engine too.

Tempted to get it purely for the 60fps (DSII and DSIII feel soooo much better to play in that respect), but I think I'll be waiting on a discount before buying that game for a third time.

They could be using DS3 engine.. not to mention 60fps mode for PS4/xbone for a game that was meant for 30fps, which will change combat.

Funnily enough, I've never actually beaten it. Couldn't get a feel for the game, the same way I did with its sequels. But I'd be keen to give it another shot with better optimisation. Might actually get past Blighttown this time around!

I'm not judging, I own 3 versions of Ocarina of Time (N64, GC and 3DS) 3 versions of Skyrim (Launch edition and Legendary edition on 360, special edition on X1) and Doom 1 and 2 on like everything it's been released on.

Maybe i'll grab the DS Remastered since the only one i've really played is DS2 and didn't get too far. Got it on X360 when it was a free games with gold a few years back.

Pretty sure you dont see the appeal in buying a game once......

Depends. If you enjoy a game enough then when it is released again and it can offer you something you may be inclined to buy again. People don't always buy it again because they like buying it.

From Q's games, I understand Ocarina of Time. I own it twice, almost 3 times (yet to buy 3DS version. Once because of the initial game. Twice because it was part of a collection (Also if I recall correctly it looks better, it certainly lags and freezes less). And the third time on 3DS because it's smoother/less jaggy and portable. There might be slight differences on 3DS, I know there is for Majora. It's also one of the most celebrated/beloved games so I expect people would play different versions if they loved it that much.

For Doom (at least the first), from what I understand, a lot of versions are different. In some a lot of it has to do with the music or the looks, and I think some levels are different or missing so I can understand playing it for a different experience.

Q's likely not going around buying multiple copies for games he hates or "only kinda likes". He's probably really into those games.

As for myself with Dark Souls, I first owned it on PS3 where I quit out of frustration; and then later on PC when it was super cheap, thinking I'd like to play it again after falling in love with the rest of the series. But a combination of it not performing any better on PC and being distracted by newer games prevented me from getting far with it.

There is a rumour there could be a loyalty discount though, so we'll see (however I feel like that's just wishful thinking).

Oh, that's nothing. I'll be buying it full price, on launch, and for a platform where I already own the original.

Quite accurate Fox, thanks for the backup.

With Ocarina of time, I bought the original for N64 back in 2002, then I got the GC version that comes with the Master Quest version and a higher resolution. I got the 3DS version because I wanted to play it with the upgraded graphics and 3D effect. With Doom, I was just joking about having it for everything, but I do have it on PC, SNES, Part of the Doom 3 BFG edition on X360 and XBOX360 arcade edition
