@Cruinn-Annuin (or anyone else): blackened crust

Have any recommendations? I like punk and I like black metal, so I should love this, but I'm not sure where to start. I like Gallhammer and I like what I've heard of Dark Thrones and Black Flags but there have to be better bands in the genre, right?

also willing to take recommendations on just generally grimy, noisy shit. i've been into this lately:

Golgotha - Nothingness

First band that comes to mind is Young and in the Way:

Full disclosure: YAITW broke up recently after multiple sexual assault allegations, so keep that in mind if that affects your decision to support them.

Also check out The Secret for black/crust that's a little grindier:

For a much more indulgent, post-y, prog-y take on the concept of black + hardcore derivative, check out Oathbreaker:

While not blackened, I still have to mention my favorite crust band, Trap Them:

They incorporate more elements of powerviolence and grind than the other recs, so it might not be what you're looking for, but they're in the same neighborhood at least. Maybe you'll like them.

Based on that track, you might want to start thinking about old school death metal in general. I'm not familiar with Golgotha, but it sounds like a good bit of the OSDM that I listen to.

Hey, thanks so much. I'm slowly making my way through all of this. A few thoughts for now:

YAITW was pretty good but yeah probably not gonna be listening to them.

The Secret is exactly what I was looking for. Plus that album art is awesome. I really enjoyed Trap Them, too.

I'm not familiar with Golgotha,

That track was from the demo Acid Bath put out before they changed their name to Acid Bath. Not a huge fan of them after the name change, though, I think it's the shit sound quality of the demo that does it for me lol.

I'll work my way through those albums eventually. I know I've listened to Bolt Thrower and Autopsy before. I'm not a big fan of Death Metal—too many cheesy leads and the vocals just make me think of the Cookie Monster. And generally I think it's kinda boring.

Although, I do still really like Cryptopsy and Asphyx, and maybe a couple older Morbid Angel songs.

Cool. I'm glad that you like them.

Huh. I did not know that they had a heavier sound like that. That's interesting.

I've been trying to show my friends Acid Bath recently, but it's kinda hard when they're not on any streaming services. When I first discovered them, I had to torrent When the Kite String Pops because that was the only way I could get my hands on it.

At the risk of being tautological, it's bad when it's bad and it can be real good when it's good. The early attempts at progressively more extreme elements, especially vocals, were experimental and suffered from a lack of technique and production. There are a few diamonds in the rough, though.

Cryptopsy - one of my favorites. Morbid Angel is a recent acquisition for me, but I like the way they sound and will likely dig into them more. I haven't personally listened to Asphyx, but I've heard the name several times and they appear to be well-respected. I'll check them out soon.
