I would like to think that a fucking Chimp could win against him. But America's ridiculous electoral college will probably fuck it up again.

I'm against all inexperienced celebrities seeking political office. But if that's the inevitable result of American democratic culture I suppose it's not the worst choice.

In all honesty, it's such a blindingly, obviously brilliant idea of the Dems to make her torchbearer and I'm surprised there was no hint of this earlier.. i guess because a billionaire celebrity with no political experience becoming president is unheard of

I'm trying to figure out whether her early reveal was strategic or desperate. I'm leaning toward desperate in wake of HRC: Revisited. Now [R] can get their body ready for Oprah and start an undermining campaign. Dem enthusiasm beings 2018 and peaks before 2019-2020... maybe/not. They'll see her coming miles away now, so it seems desperate, but they could want her to get that locomotion early. Her contrast to Hillary puts her over the moon in terms of public appeal and affability. She's not scandalous and her PR is above reproach exemplary. She's claiming to end... all violence or something... and she'll accomplish this by.. offloading blame onto Americans with healthy patriotism, probably. Predictable leftist playbook.

Obama was half-white, half-african and raised in Hawaii.

Oprah is an African-american raised in rural Mississippi.

Huge difference there.

Interesting how you see that difference but failed to see that Trump had nothing in common with the vast majority of rural America.

Oprah would be the first self made billionaire as well. An actual rag to riches story.

ancaps don't vote for a president, the job goes to the lowest bidder.

Oprah could win if she wanted to and, unlike other presidents who have attempted to "run the country like a business," Oprah doesn't suck at business. I'm not wild about her penchant for hippie medicine but I could vote for her without physically being ill, which is better than can be said for basically every *other* option the Dems have floated since 2016.

How about someone with actual political experience, credentials and principles, and can be described as potentially competent in office?

Those all seem like criticisms of Oprah, which I agree with, she has no credentials or political experience.

So I don't know what you're implying by saying the democrats "have learned nothing," since Hillary Clinton embodied everything you just described.

The only thing she has in common with Oprah is that they're both women.

Except the “principles” part.

As long as the Democrats are corrupt and funded by corporate/PAC money, they will fail as an opposition party. Let’s not play dumb; Democrats can only win if they run grassroots populist types who actually believe in and act on what they’re saying. Millenials will vote for Bernie’s corpse before they elect someone like Clinton, Kaine or Booker.

We *need* a Sanders/Ellison/Kamala Herris and for the sake of the Overton Window we need them badly, but an actual left-centrist (a difference split between Sanders and Hillary) might still be electable. The issues at hand were how utterly hated Hillary actually was and how poorly she was sold to us.

A huge part of why Sanders was popular was that he never sold himself as a meme (or as millennials' cool granddad); while Trump is a living meme unto himself and had all of 4/8chan to do his work, and Clinton's team desperately tried to ape that kind of engagement, Sanders was very clear that he was not looking to be anything other than a president and a representative of the people. If he was funny it was organic. Feel the Bern manifested naturally. And the reason this is important is that the new generation is so irony-saturated that manufactured memetics just rolls right off. They're very, very good at spotting frauds.

The joke I usually make is that the Democrats will try to one up the Republicans by running Dennis Rodman, and I do this because it's difficult to think of celebrities that are less suited for the office than Donald Trump without resorting to the one-two punch of North Korea sympathizing and very likely fentanyl addict. In an age of Trump, why not Oprah Winfrey, unless of course we wanted not to disgrace ourselves.

Oprah is one of the most annoying people on television. I struggle to accept that anyone other than aging, daytime television watching women would feel differently. She's not as annoying as Trump, but still.

Did you see this tweet from the offficial account of the Democrat Party?
https://twitter.com/TheDemocrats/status/950036099149287424
"Let's elect:

✅Black women
✅LGBT women
✅Muslim women
✅Disabled women
✅Jewish women
✅Latina women
✅Millennial women
✅Jewish women
✅AAPI women
✅More. Women."

Jewish women listed twice lol.

Make no mistake. It's an anti-white party. An anti-male party. And also an anti-Christian party.

These are necessary conditions, but not sufficient ones to win a general election.

Others have beaten me to the chase. Clinton is relatively competent and certainly has experience, but she has little to no principles, as pacman said. In addition, she was a divisive figure, had difficulty communicating, and had little to offer beyond the usual centrist sound bites and "because I'm a woman". They picked the establishment dynast in a race that required an issue-focused insurgent.

Women aren't a special interest group, and neither are blacks or homosexuals. In any case, the Democrats being a total embarrassment with tweets of this nature is the best vindication the Trump team could ever hope to have.

Why does she annoy you, Famov?

I've had to deal with a fair amount of daytime talk over the years - more Ellen than Oprah, who is much worse and makes me want to get hit by a car - and it's a combination of everything those shows stand for that makes me nauseous: the celebrity gossip, the pop sci swill, the center-left propagandizing, the pop culture talk that only a mom could like. At all times insipid, and there Oprah sits as the queen of this intentional mediocrity. It is no small thing when I say I like her more than Donald Trump, but let's see if I continue to think that once she starts actually campaigning.

Yeah, I'm still not getting it.

When you say "have learned nothing", I take that to mean Dems are making the same mistake in Oprah that they did with Clinton.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like you're just saying that electing any woman (whether or not she has political experience or not, is charismatic or not, is likeable or not) would be a mistake.

Fully agree and would vote for her over experienced, credentialed weirdos like Joe Biden any day. Even though she'd be the ultimate Spendocrat and controlled like a puppet, at least she'd be kind and tolerable to hear about. The Dem roaster is that bad.

I would go as far as to say she is the only person from across the aisle capable of defeating Trump in 2020. She's the limit. Who is more iconic?

No, I am certainly not saying selecting a woman as the Democrat candidate regardless of circumstance would be a mistake.

I am saying that selecting Oprah would be a regression, in the sense that the Dems would be opting for a candidate largely on the basis that Oprah was a non-career politician, outside the party political scene, who had celebrity appeal and a loose 'progressive' agenda. She would be picked because she would have similar attributes to Trump's candidacy.

But this would be merely denigrating the process, lowering the Presidential Office to a contest of who has the most celebrity appeal - paradoxically, Trump broke the glass ceiling on that facet, in that candidates who would have previously been considered unquestionably unsuitable are now thought of as potentially serious political figures (because who can now be more absurd than Trump?).

I don't find much that is praiseworthy in the Dems at the moment, but equally I think Trump is totally unsuitable for office, and a demeaning figure overall. The Dems should not seek to ape this. The biggest shame is that they had an arguably strong winning formula in the form of Sanders, but against better judgement they hamstrung him and then chose the figure who represented the most cynical form of politics in Washington.

The US and UK are very different countries, but a comparison and contrast between what happened to Sanders and what happened to Labour's Corbyn in terms of their party's electoral success should be informative.

Alright, that's all fine then, I just took what you said the wrong way. I guess I'm just trippin.

Although I will say that, after having thought about it, I actually do hope that Oprah runs in the 2020 election. People will want to hear her speeches, and if she gets on the debate stage she'll likely domineer it. I don't think she'd win, and I certainly hope she wouldn't, but I do think she could steer the dialogue of the democratic primaries in ways that address minority, women, and other progressive issues.

If Trump hadn't won the Republican nomination, after all, we would all recognize how he drove the conversation towards base personal attacks, xenophobia and racism.

In the overly crowded Democratic field, I think she could be an overall good influence on national consciousness in the exact same way that Trump was an overall negative influence.

The same argument can be made for Sanders, too. He may not have won, but his campaign alone mobilized millions of Americans to stop dismissing things like universal health and free college education as socialist and irresponsible.
