Today, the USWNT beat Thailand 13-0. I can't imagine this being good for the game. This lopsided victory shows that the pool of talent for women's soccer on a global level isn't deep outside a few privileged countries. Women's soccer isn't a grassroots game like the men's where you can see a group of men or boys kicking around a crusty ball in a dirty field in any country in the world. By contrast, women's soccer is only for firstworld women.

This victory by the USWNT tarnishes the image of the sport. Why did the USA celebrate so excessively? Just to rub it in? It's akin to rich kids ridiculing urban children for being unable to play lacrosse

The men's game isn't all that diverse in terms of its winners either. There really are only a small handful of clubs that really have a chance. The talent pool isn't really spread out evenly in the men's game. We can be reasonably certain that in a couple years, yet another European team is gonna win. Maybe one of two central American teams can emerge. They do have some history of success, but largely, we really can expect it to be among 5 or 6 teams each year.

But also, if the argument is that it's a sport for rich people, how does that account for the USMNT? The US is squarely - at best - middle of the pack, despite America being the wealthiest nation in the world. So why is it only our women are good, and our men are...mediocre?

Money certainly matters in all sports, but this take is also pretty bad in the way that it ignores the role of sexism here. The money that goes into developing young talent has more to do with how seriously each country takes women's sports, and unfortunately, most nations don't take it that seriously. Even America doesn't take women's sports very seriously. We just take it more seriously that many other nations. The United States features one of the stronger, more popular and funded youth development for women. I mean, Jamaica basically cut funding for the women's team entirely, and FIFA just lets it do that for some reason. Yet those women on the Jamaican team still managed to qualify. Speaks to their drive.

All that said, this is an entirely silly take to begin with, because the US isn't going to just run away with the tournament. Thailand is not a good example of how competitive the tournament might be. Sweden always plays US tough. Japan is always a challenge. France looked pretty dang good. Germany plays tough. Canada is often competitive and in the running. And as long as Marta is on Brazil, you can never really count them out. The idea that ONE blowout somehow means the tournament isn't competitive, that the gap in women's soccer is too wide to make the sport entertaining, or that somehow one single, rare, record-breaking blowout is "bad for the sport" is kinda silly given how literally every sport features this. Wasn't that long ago Germany beat Brazil what, like 7 to 1 in a semifinal? No one said that was a bad look.

I actually think having these elite teams or players are good for sports because they draw people in, which does two things: women around the world have watched the USWNT for decades be dominant, though they haven't exactly won every World Cup. I don't think the role of those teams in inspiring women around the world to get into the game can be overlooked. These all-time great teams or players tend to draw people in who want to emulate them, or beat them out of the competitive spirit. I think the occasional dominant performance like a 13-0 blowout is good for the sport.

No one watches women's sports and there's no money from advertisers so it's no wonder why they don't get paid the same as men. It's not that complicated.

It's a basic fact that women don't seem to grasp. Nobody is watching it on the tv, the stadiums are empty as you can see in footage of the games, and even women who are fans of football don't watch women's football, so this isn't because of sexism. It's just at a very poor level that nobody's interested in
.
You look at any sport (hockey, football, soccer,) played by women and it's so lackluster. It's like if you were watching men play at half speed, and half intensity. It's not the women's fault that it's not as entertaining, but they should know their place, just like a minor league or college players knows their place.

Ok then. My overall point still stands that women's soccer is a sport that is a privileged first world women's sport and it's telling that none of those countries are poor.

Even with the European countries that win, men of color are represented highly among these teams, but the same can't be said for women's which soccer which apart from a couple of wealthy Asian countries isn't as diverse.

The fact of the matter is, they played a team of amateur athletes getting paid nothing and being mocked endlessly by a bunch of pros being paid millions doing choreographed dances when the game was already extremly lopsided. Score all the goals you want (I don't care) but don't celebrate each one like children.

Women are superior to men in soccer, volleyball, and gymnastics. Men cannot dance at all.

Some of my favorite fights in MMA are women's fights. Holly Holm vs Miesha Tate. Rose Namajunas vs Joanna Champion. Amanda Nunes vs Cris Cyborg.

Also Ronda Rousey is one of the few fighters in the UFC to headline a PPV that sold over 1 million.

Women's tennis and women's basketball is pretty popular among general sports fans. There's also MMA as Vandy pointed out.

The WNBA isn't popular, it's lack of broadcasts is an example of this, and the women can't even make a slamdunk. https://youtu.be/INcM6Q6YlpU
