"Fear is the foundation of most governments." - John Adams

"Despite the constant negative press covfefe" - Donald Trump

The Arctic Ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot, according to a report to the Commerce Department yesterday from Consulate at Bergen Norway.

Reports from fishermen, seal hunters and explorers all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone.

Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met as far north as 81 degrees 29 minutes.

Soundings to a depth of 3,100 meters showed the Gulf Stream still very warm.

Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared.

Very few seals and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals of herring and smelt which have never before ventured so far north, are being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds.

Within a few years it is predicted that due to the ice melt the sea will rise and make most coastal cities uninhabitable.

The science to prove climate change requires global data, not just local data. The good news is global research like NASA's global monitoring and the databank of historical records around the world are what prove this to be true. There wasn't enough data available in the 1920s to draw sweeping conclusions because their data wasn't as thorough.

The reason people might post articles like this without making any claims is basically a form of mudslinging. Instead of making a point that can be defeated, they just muddy the waters a bit. It's a tactic that is very obvious and I've outgrown. Anyone who thinks climate change is just not interested in learning the truth. Our oceans are acidifying, sea levels are rising, and glaciers are melting. Within a few years the North Pole will be 100% completely melted during the summer months. We already have ships sailing through the north without a need for icebreakers: records like these don't happen unless something substantial is changing to the Earth. This has not happened in Earth's history. Perhaps not since the asteroid that wiped out the Dinosaurs struck the Earth 65,000,000 years ago.

Unless you care to show me a time in recent history when a ship can pass through the Northern Sea without a slow journey through mountains of ice, glaciers the size of continents don't just decide to melt on their own.

Climate change is inevitably going to change ecosystems. Changing of ecosystems also leads to an impact on the food chain. This will also impact our lives as well. It's like a ripple effect. I wonder why people are taking such a cavalier attitude to something that'll change the way humans live in the future.

Climate change is real but I don't think the state is the best solution.

"Muh Co2"

Even though Co2 levels were 5x higher in the Jurassic era, the planet continued to exist. It's a hype myth. They used to call it "global warming" and now they use a catch all term like "climate change". In fact, from what I have read, we are actually moving towards another ice age.

Who the fuck said anything about co2?

That's the main argument I've seen by climate change believers for the temperature rise.

The "point" (and I use that term loosely) about co2 and the planet still existing is pretty stupid and doesn't serve as a response to any but the lowest level of similarly stupid knee-jerk pop-sci global warming blurbs. However, if we can put a little more effort into responses instead of just asking if someone is retarded, that would be great. Don't make shitty, pointless one-line posts that are just insult/contradiction.

It should be said the dinosaurs were killed off by an asteroid that ejected more debris in the atmosphere than THE MOON. The Earth will live. We will die a slow and horrible painful death. Most of our biggest cities are on the coast. Climate change is a serious threat to that and it should be treated as such.

CO2 levels right now are HIGHER than they were when dinosaurs were on Earth 65 million years ago. That's how much we've changed our atmosphere. We can have all of the conveniences of modern life and not have this problem, but because any reduction to climate change would mean the end of people getting rich from oil and free energy for everybody, some people just won't have it and will go out of their way to stop technology from marching forward even if it means the death of us all.

Geezus people, my state can power all your homes if you just let us!

Crazy right? I would've thought quintupling the Co2 would've blown up the earth!

Ok ok obviously you mean life continued to exist. Yes but that ecosystem was used to it. This one isn't. Plus life isn't what's in danger. Trust me. It doesn't matter that you have WiFi. An extinction event isn't gonna be a comfy ride no matter how far we have come.

My "the planet continued to exist" comment was referring to the idea that this is the onset of the Apocalypse. That we all need to get in our doom bunkers. That this would be the end. Shit has always fluctuated.

You tell me. You're the one that wants to make that the argument. Except you do it in the stupidest and most reductive way possible, in order to make your slightly less stupid and reductive response look better.

Support lab grown meat. Artificial protein and nutrients in general is a huge step towards self-sustenance and every little bit that removes humanity's reliance on the outside environment is what will save our asses.

As long as the genetics that produces the intelligence needed to invent tools makes it from one generation to the next, the rest of the animal kingdom can sink or swim.

They used to call it "global warming" and now they use a catch all term like "climate change".

To be clear, "global warming" does often get used rather interchangeably with "climate change," but these aren't - on a technical level - referring to the exact same thing. "Global warming" refers to the century-long rise in global temperatures, which is a thing that has been happening. From 1900 to today, there has been a dramatic rise in average temperature.

"Climate change" is connected to this trend, but examines a larger scope. It isn't meant to just encompass average global temperatures, but rather, looks to include things like weather. The terms are related, but the primary reason for the shift in terminology was that "global warming" as a term was more limited in scope. Temperature isn't the only problem with the change in climate, as we're seeing with more powerful storms and more extreme weather becoming more common.

I understand the confusion, especially as the focus of conversation shifted from just temperatures to climate overall, and because often, people use the terms interchangeably. However, they don't refer exactly to the same thing. Global warming is a part of climate change, but climate change is not only global warming.

Ocean Acidification, for instance, does not fall under the title "global warming" because the problem is not linked to warmth. But it is a form of climate change.

The fools who pick on the name of a problem don't have anything to say about the problem.

Ummmm... I'm not sure but I think you're accusing me of callousness or contempt for non-human life.

I'm saying that if the ship is sinking we're going to need life boats. If the ecosystem is collapsing we need to survive it, and that means less reliance on nature.

We're the only hope life has of reaching the stars and surviving our sun's death, and if we go extinct there's no guarantee that any future species will be as smart as we are or get as far as we have.

If I had my way there wouldn't be an extinction event and life in all its shapes and sizes would be healthy and thrive. But that's not what is happening.

Trump only lost the pop vote because nobody in California would vote for him. All across the states he won state after state after state. More states in the country believe in the Trump mindset.

Solar and wind are the cheapest forms of energy today, by the order of 5x less than oil. But guess what's the most popular form of energy? Oil. Gee, I wonder, why is that, would you say? Don't you think it's perhaps the fact that no one can get rich off of free energy, but they can get filthy rich selling a commodity to you every week? The Koch Brothers are practically the epitome of evil the way they support so many extreme right-wing and absolutely bonkers candidates solely for the purpose of stopping solar initiatives from taking place. That's how Kasich came to be: the Koch Brothers donated tons of cash to his campaign to stop Ohio's solar energy program.

Germany has far less sunlight than the US, yet runs on 100% renewable energy. And people's lives are far better because of it.

Solar, as it is right now, is better than every other form of electricity. The only reason it's not being tapped into is because of politics. And with Republicans controlling the Executive branch, the Legislative branch, the Judicial branch, and 70% of all state houses, you cannot tell me Republicans are right for doing this. Not at all. They really don't mind dragging us back to the industrial revolution when we burned coal. That's your f-king president, not mine.

Couple things. First, one should not confuse "states" with "people." You also ignore that he won narrowly in a bunch of key states; some of which, by the way, have been problematically pursuing voter suppression laws. (I mean, there's an entire disenfranchised population that's pretty sizable, particularly in southern states, that impacts every single local, state, and federal election.) It's hardly like the election of Donald Trump represents anything about the overall will of the people.

The other thing is, in what alternative timeline do you foresee ANY person elected being able to give us "free electricity"? That wouldn't have even happened under Bernie, man. So if "you had your way" (because it's always all about you), we would be in an entirely different reality.
