Picked up a new Mossberg 590 Shockwave. Here I am, happy as a goddamn clam:

I picked it up recently because I wanted something a little heavier for home defense. It was actually relatively cheap. Tac shotties often run up several hundred, but this was $375 brand new. Fun as hell to shoot. Doesn't kick as much as I thought it would with the 2 3/4" shells, but the 3" are a little rowdy.

I was also considering a Mossberg 500 pistol grip because it has one higher capacity. I decided that if it comes down to the difference between 6 and 7 rounds, I'm in way over my head anyway. I took the more maneuverable option.

Hopefully, I'll be moving into a house with my girlfriend over this next year. This is part of the reason that I wanted a more significant firearm. I ain't gonna fucking around with a peashooter if I have to defend her or the house.

I canceled my gym membership. It was fun seeing other people work out for a while, but I didn't like the divide that it created in my schedule. Besides, I already have my own barbell that I bought before I knew I was going to be moving to my current place. It's just been languishing here in my apartment for a while, but now I'm taking advantage of it. I'm up to 180 lbs. anyway, which was my goal over this year. I might go up to 200 over the next year, but I'm not worried about it.

I cleaned out a lot of stuff that I owned and organized the rest of it. My life feels so much simpler and healthier than it did one year ago. I'm really happy that I've made all these changes - it leaves more room for the things that I want to prioritize over the next year. I don't really have New Year's Resolution in the explicit sense, but I do want to adjust my behavior in subtle ways. I want to make my exercise simpler and more consistent; I want to listen to more music and take more music classes so I can really develop an ear; I want to engage with more art instead of mere entertainment; etc.

I'm starting a new battle vest with a completely fresh theme: all red. The first batch of patches should be coming in in a couple of weeks. I think this one will be finished much quicker than my first one. I'm going for a simpler theme that I'm not going to design custom stuff for. It's just going to be a simple, streamlined death/doom/sludge vest with no spikes, pins, dangly bits, etc. It will explicitly be a rough-housin', beer-drinkin' vest that I don't have to worry about damaging or staining.

That's everything on my mind right now. How are y'all?

Happy to see that you are doing well!

I am doing okay. I enjoyed my time off but it is dragging on now. I realized as much as I bitch and moan about work I actually miss it as it gets me out of the house.

Ive been gaming, reading and watching movies. I realized that I no longer find gaming to be a fulfilling hobby. Ive decided to scale it back and only play releases that I am interested in/ am actively following. This leaves me with a library of 3ds games that Ill probably never jump into. I am okay with that. (there are 3-4 releases that I am looking forward to, all of which will grace the Ps4 in 2019. Ill make time for these and probably walk away from gaming outside of the occasional rts game)

Ive solidified two lists of resolutions/ 5 year plans. One catered around potential Peace Corps service the other Catered to regular life. In a nutshell, they include dealing with my insecurities, living a healthier life, traveling, learning new skills, writing, conducting research for a new project, and ultimately furthering my self and enriching my life.

The way I see it this time next year Ill be enjoying my time off from work and my first semester of graduate school OR enjoying my time off from PC training. But who knows nothing ever goes as planned.

I really lose my urge to play video games for weeks at a time nowadays - for a lot of reasons. Music is a lot more valuable to me now - and it's a lot more accessible and portable than gaming. I could go on about it, but it's just a mess. Music is comfy.

Dope. I hope it all goes well for you.

Music is a lot more valuable to me.

I feel it. One of my goals is to take up guitar this year.

Dope. I hope it all goes well for you.

Thanks these last few days have been a challenge. The time between Xmas and new years truly is the taint of the holiday season. Time moves differently here and its made me some what lethargic and depressed lol.

Too late.

Welcome back.

Interesting that you are dropping your gym membership. My wife and I want to start one in the next few weeks. I've never had a paid membership (outside of tuition costs) and I think it will be a good motivator for me to keep going. I cannot stand wasted money, so if I am paying for it I will not be the type to just not go and let the money flutter away. Our house is small and I do not think we have sufficient room for much equipment without forcing a car out of our garage or turning a bedroom into a mini gym.

There is a pretty small and I think limited gym just 5 minutes away from our house that we are thinking we will join. We can pay for a year and get less than $10/month. Although it is limited, I don't need a lot of fancy equipment and the convenience factor is more important for me to keep going. I just want dumbells and a squat rack really. If there is a barbell that's a plus because I do like to bench press, however I would take the versatility of dumbells over the barbell if I can only have one.

I want to start working out because it also motivates me to eat better. I've lost 15 lbs since I was working out and eating more last January. When I work out I eat about 3X more and better in general (less chips and processed foods in general). I currently weight ~140 lbs; I would like to be ~160 lbs.

Dam vandy you gotta pump those numbers up. They are rookie numbers. (Jealous I am) I currently at 230ish. I was a solid 200lbs spring 2016 and doing well for my self

Good on you, Vandy. It's always nice to see some people pulling some weight.

My go-to bulking meals:

Oatmeal and peanut butter (with a little honey).

Black beans and brown rice (sometimes with a little ground turkey) slow-cooked in a crock pot.

Baked chicken breasts with onions and potatoes.

It's pretty damn cheap, especially since I get to supplement it with free pizza from my job.

When I was gaining weight last year I would eat a full meal of whatever and then have a protein shake. I mix:

1 or 2 bananas
1 apple
a few spoons of peanut butter
whole milk
protein powder

It comes out tasting mostly like peanut butter. They're actually pretty enjoyable. I recently read a good idea to first blend up dry oats into a powder and then add the rest to add some calories and fiber.

Yeah I want to eat more beans and rice. I actually really like it and it's simple. A few days ago I made rice but this time I seared the dry rice in olive oil with garlic and then added chicken stock instead of water (I bought dry chicken stock powder from WINCO bulk bins that can be added to a cup of water instead of having to buy the boxes of stock - comes out a lot cheaper that way). The rice had a ton of flavor.

Posted January 1st by Vandy

That rice sounds amazing. I'll have to try that.

Today, I made a pot of ginger tea with honey and lemon. I plan on trying to legitimately push my vocal skill up over 2019, so I need to pay serious attention to protecting my throat. The honey-lemon-ginger thing is a mainstay employed by everyone from classical singers to death metal vocalists and even voice actors (most famously Andy Serkis as Gollum). It's pretty easy to make and it tastes good as well.

Are you trying voice acting or singing?

Posted January 3rd by Vandy

Singing and harsh vocals.

Working full-time actually has a bit of benefit, because it's basically been like the hyperbolic time chamber in terms of music listening. When you work for eight hours a day, five days a week, with four or five people bringing different music in, you can get a lot of informal practice in.

I've decided that, in the interest of re-entering the literary tradition that I have been ignoring over the last year, I am going to invest myself in an expansive fiction series with the end goal of becoming a loremaster that can bore my friends to tears with second-hand knowledge. To that end, I've been trying to find the most girthy single-author series within he realm of things that I care about - something that the vast majority of people won't even try to read, let alone dedicate themselves completely to.

From the research I've done, it looks like the Eternal Champion Sequence by Michael Moorcock is exactly what I'm looking for. Around fifty novels regarding the titular multiverse-spanning archetype; not only do I find the concept incredibly intriguing, the severe amount of material also provides an attractive challenge. The next two fantasy series in number of novels, Xanth and Discworld, are both parody; while not without value, I'm looking for something with more literary weight.

Anyone else know of a fantasy or sci-fi series with a comparable number of novels written by one author?

The only thing I can possibly recommend is A Song of Ice and Fire but I assume that's too mainstream for what you're looking for. However I argue that 90%% of the fanbase you will encounter only watch the show and are absolutely not familiar with the more intricate lore, choosing to refer to Daenerys as Khaleesi.

Too popular, too short...and I've already read it. Thank you, though.

@Knuckles:

I didn't block you on GT, but be aware that I did delete my account, so you can't PM me or add me to clubs. I harbor no ill will towards you, but I do not wish to speak to you privately. That's why I'm responding to you here.

The time of mutual respect and teamwork that we had before I left the site was genuine and not a power play. Getting along with people is always preferable to the alternative. However, I would prefer to not be in personal contact.

I didn't do that or even notice you deleted your account but thank you for clearing that and the rest of it up. I understand why I guess. I'm glad it wasn't you regardless.

We make pizza, salads, sandwiches (including a kinda nice philly and french dip) and some miscellaneous pub food like chicken strips, buffalo wings, cheese sticks. Our pizza is quite clearly the best thing we have. We make the dough, we shred the cheese, we cut the veggies, etc. and it shows in the final product. Our salads are pretty good as well and our sandwiches are good if you're drunk. The chicken strips and such are processed and I can only recommend it for when you need some fast, simple food.

Personally, I usually make myself a supreme (no meat, add sriracha and basil pesto) once per shift. It's fucking great.
